My main concern when I was planning to stop smoking was that I would gain weight. I wasn’t 100% happy with my appearance as it was and I thought that to stop smoking would probably mean to start eating!
This is the most common myth that causes many smokers not to stop smoking. In reality, facts show us that not every smoker who stopped smoking is due to gain weight only because he doesn’t smoke anymore. This myth was created (and is still supported) by smokers who did gain weight and by smokers that the weight issue was already there for them in the first place. When they smoked they would already regard smoking as a way to suppress their appetite. Never the less, the stop smoking and start eating myth still bother many smokers. It is important to understand its source and the relationship between stop smoking and wanting to eat more.
Every time you inhale smoke into the mouth area there are chemicals that reduce the sense of flavor of your mouth and tongue. Over time, smokers feel less and less of the food’s real flavors. When you stop smoking the sense of flavor returns and your appetite becomes sharper.
People who stop smoking but feel difficulty to control the amount of food are experiencing it because food became a kind of “comfort” for them. Over-eating became a replacement for not smoking. Smoking, just like eating, is a matter of understanding your day-to-day habits and taking control of them. The right way to stop smoking means learning that self-control and knowing how to allow your body and mind to enjoy other pleasures. Things which are not addictive and do not damage your health. In other words enjoy life.
It might be hard for you now to imagine your life without cigarettes but it is definitely possible. You weren’t born smoking right? Was your life worst before you started smoking? I bet you didn’t really miss anything by not smoking yet now you feel you MUST do it and can’t live without it. This is the “tobacco demon” in you and I had it in me too. Let me tell you a little secret – I still have it! Every ex-smoker has it because you can never completely get rid of it. But in time, he gets weaker and weaker until you hardly ever think about smoking again. This is where I am now and I use my experience to help people get to that point too.
My name is Sharon and I smoked for almost 40 years. I decided to stop smoking because of my children and because I realized my health was only getting worst. When I first saw my teenage daughter holding a cigarette that’s when I decided to end it. My husband, our two children and myself are now a smoke-free family. I have to agree, I did gain about 2 kilos when I was quitting just because I allowed myself to eat instead of smoke. now I lost it already. It was much easier to loose the weight than to quit smoking hahaha thanks quit monkey and especially you Sharon!
