Quitting Smoking | by Holly Pearson

Quitting smoking was a huge thing for me! I started to smoke in grade 9 when most of my friends started to get into it. My dad smokes like a chimney so it was so easy to grab a few off him every once in a while (he would never notice). 2 years ago I decided on quitting smoking – I didn’t want to end up coughing and smelling like an ashtray for the rest of my life. My boyfriend didn’t smoke so he seriously hated how I smelled. All my friends still smoked though which made it so freaking hard to stop!!

Quitting Smoking When Everyone Around Smokes

I don’t know, maybe I was just a “social smoker” but I was partying so much so I just ended up smoking too much. OMG quitting smoking was so difficult! I had no idea it would be this way. It’s so easy to say yes when everyone around you smokes. And guys would even pay me out when I tried to refuse a smoke. So what can you do?? Also, I was so worried that if I stopped smoking I’ll start eating more – and the last thing I wanted was to get fat.

Does Quitting Smoking Mean Getting Fat?

Now I know that quitting smoking doesn’t mean putting on weight. You just have to find other things to do instead of smoking or eating. And eating is way better than smoking. You can always eat non-fat food – as much as you want. I did a few diets already and trust me they were WAY easier than quitting smoking. Especially when you’re going out and stuff and everyone smokes.

Hey Holly, what do you think about using quit smoking aids like patches, gums etc.? have you used them when you were quitting?

  2. Holly @ QuitMonkey says:

Hi David, yes I’ve tried them twice before but failed.. I don’t wanna knock them off but I think that the psychological addiction is what makes you wanna smoke again and again. Replacing the nicotine with another type of nicotine might work for a while but it’s not gonna make the cravings stop. You will see people smoking or be in situations where you will still want to smoke. The habit of smoking is in your behavior and in how you think about smoking. If you change your thinking, behaviors and habits (the handbook has plenty of great ways to do it) then you won’t need nicotine replacements. Perhaps try one of the other tips regarding staying away from cigarettes during the first week of the program.
